2006 Mercedes Benz SLK 350 - Will I need to purchase a navigation system?

I just bought a “what I thought” fully loaded 2006 Mercedes Benz SLK 350. It turns out that the vehicle does not have a navigation system; however, it displays all the necessary navigation buttons. Every time I try using the system I get this message on the display screen “navigation is unavailable”.

I’m not sure about what’s needed to get the system activated/installed... will I need to purchase a navigation system to replace what is currently in my vehicle, if so, what brand and model is needed (if possible, please provide me with the name of a generic model and name band model)?

If the system is already installed but not activated can I just call a company to activate the system, or is there a CD that I can purchase to activate it?

Besides the MB dealership, are there any other companies that I can go to in Maryland (MD), Washington DC (DC), or Virginia (VA) to have the system installed?

If you want to install the Benz unit that integrates into the centre console COMAND unit, you need to install the DVD navigation module kit. It is a dealer installed option but it is pricey ( over $2G's ).

The button you see marked for navigation is standard with the upgraded COMAND/premium sound package but the actual drive unit is another option. That nav. button just means that the vehicle is ready and prewired to accept the module kit.

NO, the Mercedes Benz navigation system will not speak streat names, it will however allow you to zoom in to .5 of a mile level and is very accurate. It will display the name of the road that you are on and tell you how far away your turn is 500 ft 400 ft 300ft and it even gives you a little gague so that you know exactly where to turn but it does NOT say street names. Yes the Cd player will play Mp3's No the car does not have any major issues, however recalls are on a specific vin case, make sure you check with your local dealership before you purchase a vehicle to make sure that any recalls announced have been performed.

if you have the screen, there should be an eject button, the screen will open and you have to insert the cd for the navigation.and that will be it.
