All the letters use to mean something in the 80's but today, only a few of them do.

S- Sonderklasse, (or special class) because its the top of the line Mercedes-Benz sedan.

E- the letter no longer means anything(use to mean Einspritzung or that it runs on fuel. Like in the SEL todays S class, Special fuelpowered longbody). This is the midsize sedan from Mercedes.

C- this letter also no longer has a meaning(MAYBE COMPACT?). Its the smallest sedan from Mercedes

So your one of these hicks that pronounces "Mercedes" "MAR-say-deez"??

The letters have just really loose meaning. The E has been around a long time. People will say it means "executive" but I don't think so, it started when the E was for the word "fuel injection" in German (einspritzer or something like that) and they just kept using it.

The C, again just really loose meaning, it's just that they put a letter on the series for sales purposes (the REAL designations are numbers, for example 201, 202, 210, 211, etc.) The best reason I can think of for C might be "Compact", although in German it starts with a K I think? But the USA is a big market. The S class I think loosely is associated with the word "Super" since it's the top dog car.

The Toyota. It is a lot more reliable, and has an even better resale. Mercedes has had a lot of quality problems as of late (there are talks of seperating from Chrysler), and are expensive to fix once out of warranty. And while the Mercedes nameplate is nice, people can tell you are driving the cheapest version. I would get the Toyota because I am pretty sure it would not spend a lot of time on the dealers lift. Short of Mercedes just having a better dealer network in your area, they have almost no advantages over the Toyotas.

I have a S500 and an SL550, I was told by the sales man who sold me my mercedes that all of the convertables will start with "SL" and he also told me that just "S" is for Sedan.
