I recently moved to Chicago from Denver and I need to find a reputable Independent Mercedes Repair Shop in the Chicago area. I took my car my local Mercedes-Benz dealer and they wanted over $1,200 for a brake job and an additional $500 for the check engine light. I drive a 2003 Mercedes E320. Thanks for your help!

I take my car to Burdi's Motors Works, Inc. in Schiller Park, IL. Its near the airport and they are very honest and reasonable. The shop owner has over 30 years experience on Mercedes and is probally the best Mercedes Mechanic in Chicago by far! I've owned Mercedes cars for 20 years and I love them! I wish I met Carmine 20 years ago, but glad I found him last year. I had a complete brake job done at their shop last year for at least 50% less than what you got quoted. Carmine was trained in Germany and previously worked at some of the local Mercedes-Benz dealer before opening his own shop. I think he told me that he worked at Autohaus on Edens, Knauz, Mercedes Benz of Chicago (Formerly Loeber Motors). He aslo employees other former dealer mechanics. I don't live in Chicago so I can't help you with recommendations but make sure you find someone that is familiar with the W211 chassis. Benz introduced SBC ( Sensatronic Brake Control ) on that E-Class ( as well as the also then new SL ) and it does make brake work more difficult to work on. The person working on the car can screw up the system if he/she isn't familiar with it.

As far as the CEL is concerned, $500 may not be unreasonable. It all depends on what the vehicle needs.
