They had several years, when the quality dropped, but it's back to usual good quality and engineering now.
Even those "quality reports" say so. I do not believe those reports much, but still...

What happened to that motto? They finally got smart and built cars that were reliable like everyone else. :-p
They used to be very VERY well-built cars. Then they decided their cars were over-engineered, and cut costs.
By the time the 1st generation M-class came out, Mercedes had ruined all of their reputation as far as reliability was concerned, and that M-class was the worst.
In the last couple of years, they've made the decision to get some of that reputation back by cutting their profits from $2billion to $1billion and putting that money into improving the quality of their cars.
I don't think they'll bring back the slogan anyways...companies get new ones all the time. Toyota doesn't use "I love what you do for me!" anymore either.
I think now they use "Only Mercedes-Benz" meaning that only their car will do when it comes to luxury cars.

The last year for the "built like a vault" was the 1990 W126 S class. The thinking after that was based on profit instead of the engineering...the way the "Big Three" have always built their automobiles.
Remember, the S class Mercedes was the model for the Lexus.

They used to have impeccable build quality and reliability, but 10 years ago or so the company decided their cars were too over-engineered and decided to cut costs and cut corners. They say the quality is coming back. No, not really.
