Not at all. The A and B Class Benzes are all front wheel drive. Most other models are rear wheel drive in standard configuration but are also available in all wheel drive. All wheel drive vehicles by Mercedes are branded 4Matic.
@Max Cruise: The question is about Mercedes cars in England, not the US. While the A and B Class are not yet sold in the US, the B Class is sold in Canada and the A and B are both sold in Mexico. The A Class may be available in Canada though I'm not positive on that. The A and B Class are both available in England, and most of the rest of the world for that matter.
Mercedes is pitched in the US market primarily as an exclusive, luxury brand. In most of the rest of the world, it's a full-line manufacturer covering every segment from utilitarian to ultra-luxury. Mercedes also makes a full line of trucks and buses that run the gamut from small city-delivery vans to minivans to semi-tractors to cab and chassis assemblies that can carry pretty much anything. Garbage trucks in Boston use to be (and may still be for all that I know) made by Mercedes.

Mercedes does not produce a front wheel drive car. So unless you buy a Mercedes all wheel drive, then yes, all Mercedes are rear wheel drive.
Same applies to Mercedes sold in the USA.
Answer easily found on the website below.
EDIT
See second link.
A Class is not available in the USA. Never heard of this car before this question. While I looked on the website, can't find any comment regarding the A Class being FWD or RWD.
You can always call your local Mercedes dealer.

They leave the factory in Stuttgart as rear wheel drive. Something mysterious happens, however, when they cross the Channel. They become AWD. Crazy, don't you think?
